SAPPHIRE
Sapphire is one of the “big three” of jewelry colored gemstones—the other two being ruby and emerald. When shopping for sapphire, be sure to ask if the stone has been treated. A naturally colored sapphire will fetch far more money, and has more value, than one that has been altered. Sapphires come in a multitude of colors, and when they are red, they are rubies! Sapphires captivate their audience with their durability, rarity and aura of romance. For centuries, sapphire has been associated with royalty. Traditionally, they symbolize nobility, truth, sincerity, and faithfulness. Large blue sapphires are very rare, and market price reflects that. Sapphire is the birthstone for September, the gemstone for Taurus and Aquarius, and the gem of the 5th and 45th anniversaries. SPINEL
Spinel is a very underrated member of the gemstone family. It first appeared in historical records of fourteenth-century Spain, and has since been confused with many gems, including Ruby. As a matter of fact, the famous 14th century Black Prince’s Ruby in the British Imperial Crown is actually a red spinel, not a Ruby. Spinel crystals form so perfectly, that in Burma they are said to be “nat thwe” or “polished by the spirits.” Some of the most sought-after spinel was found in 2007 in Mahenge, Tanzania, and has an incredible hot pink glow. Spinel is a colorful, natural gem that has recently been inducted as the August birthstone, along with its predecessor, peridot. It is also the gem for the 22nd anniversary, and is believed to encourage great passion, devotion and longevity.
